National Outreach

In July of 2015, I took a group of students from my local church to a summer camp called Mission Fuge. Our camp location was at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky. Mission Fuge consists of all types of projects, which include: games, recreation, construction, yard work, assisting at medical facilities, and much more. My students and I, along with many other church groups; participated in these projects.

I was assigned to a construction group. My group was to build a wheelchair ramp for an elderly couple living just outside Williamsburg. This home had another ramp along the side of the house which had become unsafe. The old ramp had been torn down and our group began to construct the new one.

By the end of our time there, we had nearly finished the ramp. It was only lacking in some trimming, but as a whole it was ready for use. We were able to see it be used on our final day as the couple had a doctor's visit to attend. The couple was very thankful for our time and work there and it was great to see the joy on their faces.

This same joy was seen elsewhere throughout the community that summer. Some of my students worked at children's homes playing games and having Bible studies with those who lived there. A few of my students even assisted at nursing homes; making a positive impact on lives of many more people. Most importantly, many of us had the opportunity to share about our faith in God with the people we met.

In June of 2016, I was once again able to take my students from my local church to Mission Fuge. Our camp location this time was at North Greenville University in Greenville, South Carolina. Like the previous year, this camp consisted of a number of projects, including: construction, yard work, recreation, and assisting at medical facilities. This year I was assigned to a games and recreation group. Our group's task was to visit children's homes and play games, make crafts, and have Bible study time with the children living there.

My group had the opportunity to visit two different group homes for children during our time there, as well as a large park where we met with another group of students. One of the children's favorite games was musical chairs. At one particular location, we were able to have different stations for the children. We had an area for basketball and soccer, then an area for board games, and an area for arts and crafts that went along with our Bible study.

The key verse for our Bible studies was 2 Corinthians 5:17 which says: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"  For our arts and crafts, we first had the children make a caterpillar. After explaining how having God in our lives makes things new,
we then had the children transform their caterpillars into butterflies. Afterwards, many of the children had a better understanding of how God loves them and how he can change their lives.
